On 18 June 2021, the DESIRA partner María del Mar Delgado Serrano, from University of Córdoba (Spain), received the Spanish Order of Civil Merit at a ceremony presided over by the King and Queen, accompanied by their daughters.

During the ceremony, 24 exemplary citizens were honoured in recognition of their personal commitment and efforts to contribute to society. They have been distinguished for their selfless dedication “putting the common good before their own”.

Mar Delgado is a professor of economics, sociology and agricultural policy at the University of Córdoba, and rector’s delegate for international projection. In the course of the award ceremony, was highlighted her participation in projects focused on rural areas such as DESIRA (Digitisation: Economic and Social Impacts in Rural Areas).

The University of Córdoba leads the work on the policy roadmap that has the objective to identify and assess the existing policy frameworks and instruments with influence in the digitalisation of rural areas. It will also develop an ethical code, which will help research and innovators to anticipate the risks of digitalisation.

Furthermore, Mar Delgado is the project coordinator of the H2020 MOVING (MOuntain Valorisation through INterconnectedness and Green growth), sister project of DESIRA, which aims to: build capacities of mountain regions and stakeholders to enhance resilience to climate change; identify the socio-ecological factors that will shape the future of mountain value chains by 2050; and support the policy design that enhances the resilience of mountain regions through new or upgraded value chains.

Mar Delgado is also coordinating the H2020 project IN-HABIT (INclusive Health And wellBeing In small and medium size ciTies), in which she is investigating how different innovations based on the integration of social and environmental aspects can increase health and well-being in small and medium size cities.
