Depopulation is a phenomenon affecting deeply rural areas. The loss of rural population derived from the lack of economic opportunities and infrastructures cause the shutdown of many rural services, such as shops, schools or museums. How to avoid this? The Living Museums project has developed a Smart Solution to prevent the closure of many rural museums due to lack of workers or budget.
This innovative project, led by rural development associations from Castilla y Leon with the collaboration of the European Union, LEADER and the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, has made it possible to open 70 museums in nineteen rural areas in Spain and Czechia Republic.
The Living Museums project has created a “smart system” that gives small rural municipalities the chance of opening museums, interpretation centres, or other touristic and cultural heritage-related spaces at a low cost, easing access to potential visitors. As a result, these cultural spaces can open 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
